which wireless signal booster is better?

I looking to buy a wireless signal booster for my laptop and I'm not sure which one to get. 1. Well most of it's preference, it's not really necessary. The router providing the signal is the most likely culprit. I would see if you can install a custom firmware like dd-wrt on it. If you, it's actually cheaper to buy a new router that can be hacked from amazon then pay $75 for a repeater or booster.
