Wireless Signal Boosters

Do signal boosters really work to help pick up wireless signals?

I have a room mate that said they had one at one point and he said it didn't do anything for a better connection. Suggestions?

  1. mine works fine
  2. Depends if your talking about cell phone wireless or from a wireless router, if it's for a cell phone or card I have used one and it really does a great job. i purchased it from here, http://www.wi-ex.com/
  3. A wireless repeater is generally a better option than an amplified antenna booster, except it is not mobile - it is intended for home use. There is no ethernet cable runnig between the router and the repeater, so you can position it where you need it in your home - equidistant from router and wifi clients or poor coverage area. Router WAP <- -> Repeater <--> WiFi client You can buy a store bought repeater but I have never tried. Most people "build" their own for 802.11g networks. They get a Linksys WRT54GL (must be GL) and flash it with DD-WRT firmware and setup a repeater bridge using the web interface. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124190 You can also get a few 802.11n routers that can be flashed with DD-WRT to function this way as well.
  4. I'll boost your signal baby!!!!! We can get crazy Wi-Fi!!
