Wireless Signal Boosters

WiFi Internet service confusion...?

Forgive me if I use terminology incorrectly. I'm rather new at this topic: I am moving and plan on spending the next 3 months in my mini motorhome at an RV park that has WiFi. My laptop has 802.11 wifi. I also plan to get a cell phone since a land line would be impossible. Some cell phone companies tell me I must have Internet service with them for wifi A N Y W H E R E to work on my laptop. The guy at the RV park who admits he is far from being an expert says you don't have to have a service. He said at most I might have to get a signal booster if I park too far from the source. I think the cell companies are probably blowing smoke since I have caught them in a couple of other fibs too. Let me know if I haven't provided enough info for an adequate response. I fell like I don't even know enough to ask the right question.

  1. I believe he is running a local WiFi internet connection service such as some restarants and cofee shops may run, where he has a permanent internet connect set up whick he allows people to connect to with a wierless card. You should be fine if i see this correctly
  2. you can definitely boost a signal from a neighbor, I have the same 802.11 ,I am able to pick up several signals from the surrounding homes. No cell phones needed. Happy War driving ~
  3. Your wireless internet service is going to be supplied by the RV yards wireless network, and your cell phone service will be provided by the cell phone service provider. You will not have to pay the cell phone company for internet service because they will not be providing that service to you (the RV park will).
  4. I don't understand. kinda. so they make you buy a cell phone to get wifi or make you buy internet to get a cell? by wifi any where, you mean you get internet any where you are? The RV park supplies internet service via WiFi? man... if i could talk to you via aim or something... lol i could figure this out. If the RV park supports WiFi and your laptop has a compatible network card, you will recieve WiFi with no problem. You might need to buy an antenna if your parked far away. If the cell phone compaines are trying to get you to buy a internt plan/service with them to get cell phone service they are bullshitting you. They may be dicks about it, just tell them you don't want internet service damnit! I had a cable internet company tell me that i NEEDED to have cable TV to get cable internet, i laughed and said bye bye. btw make sure to find out if their network at the RV park uses 802.11b 802.11g, It might be 802.11b/g which would mean your clear. Also, if your network is both 802.11b and g compatible then you will be fine.
  5. Simply put WiFi provided IS internet service provided. You just need the wireless ethernet card to pick up the signal. They are...in fact...blowing smoke up your a**.
