can i use a router as a speed and signal booster?
i am currently staying in a hotel that offers free wifi. i hooked up my desktop and bought a linksys rangeplus wireless pci adapter. i can catch the signal but it is very weak and speed is very slow. i also have a linksys wireless g router with speed booster. my question is is there a way i can hook up my router as a signal and/or speed booster? if so how would i do it? do i need to change certain setting on the router? i am clueless and tired of losing the signal.

- 1) You can't get more speed than you start with, so that part's out. 2) You can't get more signal than there is, so that part's out. A signal booster is placed between the source and the computer, so that it's getting good signal and the computer is getting a good signal from it. Running it where the computer is will just give the computer a louder weak signal.
- Sorry, if the hotel connections is running at slower speed that's as fast as you will run your only as fast as your slowest speed. if your running at 100mbps and the hotel is at 54mbps that's what you will run at
- I don't think you can do what you want to do directly but there are other things you could try. 1) Find a near by room with a rj-47 jack and see if you can create a closer transmitter using your router. 2) Get the tech support number for the Wifi vendor for the hotel. If it is "home-made" ask who installed it, talk to them. Ditto with Linksys, call tech support and see if they can suggest something. 3) Ask to be moved to a room of the same or comparable price that is closer to the Wifi ant. 4) There are several vendors out on the internet that offer various methods of signal boosting but your looking for a fast fix. So try moving the desktop to each of the 4 walls in the room as well as to near the window and near the door (try the door open/closed).
