Wireless Signal Boosters

networking/online connection troubles?

i just got xp onto my asus g2s x3 and i was able to get online on my friends wifi but now i cant connect to my home network via ethernet it might be a driver issue but so far ive tried connecting my laptop directly to the modem and i found this wifi signal booster that my dad tells me can be used as a wireless router when connected to the our wired router. the software that came with the signal booster wouldn't recognize what middle i had on my laptop and with the software on the other computer it had recognized the device but i couldn't click the next button maybe because its not a router, when the signal booster is connected to the router and turned on i can connect my laptop to it but no online connection could be established. id like to get my internet work working on a wired connection rater than wireless, especially considering the signal booster which might possibly be a Router is nearly touching my computer so threres no point for wireless. here's the device im trying to use as a router, i didn't think it is a router but if it can help my get connected il use it, but again id like to stay wired http://www.hawkingtech.com/products/productlist.php?CatID=33&FamID=79&ProdID=241 yes my computer has been connected to the network, but that was before downgrading to xp a few days ago and might be the cause. my network is a modem going to a cable router leading off to three computers including mine. and no i didn't shut the modem off when directly connected to my computer, so il give it a shot. so anyone else that can help out please do id like to get all of this working before Monday

  1. Could you ever connect wired to your home network? Did you try leaving the modem off for a few minutes when you connected it directly to your laptop or did you just plug it into your pc without turning it off? How is your home network set up? Do you connect directly to a router? A switch? etc
