Wireless Signal Boosters

Which Is better? (Computer/Router problem)?

For a while now I have had problems with my Xbox Live connection, dealing with lag. I am on a wireless connection (No I CANNOT wire it), and my router is about 100 yards away (I am not stealing it from my neigbors). So because of that I have been lagging on a few games. So I want to know what can I do to get a better connection....Would one of these two things work? If so whcih would be better? A Range Expander (Repeater) or a Signal Booster (WiFi Signal Amplifier) Someone please help

  1. probably the range extender but i would hard wire it my self even if i had to have the wire going right through the middle of my living room.
  2. A repeater will increase lag time and cut your internet speed in half. A signal amplifier might not work on the receiving end and you're still out of luck. My suggestion is to check out things like DD-WRT, its an open source firmware that you can change on certain routers, here is the compatibility list: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Supported_Devices If you can get it on your router, it can boost your signal strength tremendously. There are additional nice feature to essentially make your own repeaters using WDS. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_Distribution_System It's pretty cool. Plus its free, so I would try this first if your hardware is compatible.
  3. Hard to say without knowing more specifics of the environment. If you have line-of-site between the two locations, you might also consider looking into a yagi (directional) antenna. If you're a do-it-yourselfer, there are plans on the 'net for making your own inexpensive yagi out of a Pringles can (see links below).
  4. Dude, if you are not stealing then there should be no problems making it a wired connection. Anybody who can afford to live in a house thats 100 yards or more from one end to the other could afford $50 for a cheap wired router and $100 for the damn cable. But to be fair and answer your question you are better off to put in a ranger expander/repeater. You may also consider upgrading your Wifi card to an Orinocco.
  5. A repeater, placed where the signal is still strong, will give you a stronger signal - atht e expense of increased latency (lag). You can't do both - improve signal strength and decrease latency. (A "range booster" is a repeater.) Wire is your only actual solution, either to another router or to your XBox.
  6. I would try the Signal Booster with this WiFi ant system..It's good for 10 mile range~!
