How do I boost the WiFi signal?

I'm rather ignorant about WiFi I must admit - where I'm living, we have WiFi, but I never manage to get out on the net using this signal, because I get a message it is very weak. So, my question is, is there anything I can do? Are there boosters or anything like that I can use on my laptop? And hey, if anybody answers ... I'm deffo not a computer nerd, so I need "simple" answers ... sorry... :(

1. Buy a cantenna. It's a Wifi receiver that boosts the reception range of your PC or laptop's wifi card. They sell for about 50 dollars.
2. Firstly is this Wifi signal given from a modem located in perhaps in a different room of you house or from a center of an office or university or building? In the latter case, you could buy the cantenna, in the former case, check whther the modem is properly configured. Usually when you set one of the parameters in auto like maybe the wireless LAN's standard, the modem keeps on adjusting constantly to one of each of the options.In this case, Fix it to 802.11g which gives 54Mbps fr short distances.
