Wireless Signal Boosters

Should I get a Motorola signal booster for my cable modem?

My signal levels for my cable modem seem to be low. Signal To Noise Ratio: 31.1 dB Downstream Power Level: -9.3 dBmV Upstream Power: 39.0 dBmV I've been told that my SNR should be around 35 dB and that my Upstream Power should be in the mid 40s. Would a Motorola signal booster improve my SNR?

  1. Don't bother. Amplification boosts signal AND noise, so your SNR won't improve with a booster. It's actually likely to degrade slightly. The key to those specs is mostly cable related. You want a top quality cable RG-6, preferably quad shielded, running to your ourside cable with as few connectors as possible (and no more than 1 splitter). Cable modems are the most demanding in terms of signal quality, followed by HDTV devices with plain old analog TV signals needing the least power.
