Wireless Signal Boosters

How do I use my PC to relay wifi signal to my laptop?

Hiya, My son has a PC that connects wirelessly to my router, however I can't get a signal from my office on the other side of the house. As my son has two wireless cards, would it be possible to connect to the internet through his computer; using his computer as a booster to relay the signal? My son is using XP, and I have Vista on mine. Cheeers. In response to Tracey; to setup an ad-hoc network, does one of the computers have to wired? Is it possible to implement totally wireless ICS?

  1. You may be able to, set one card in his machine to AD-HOC and setup an AD-HOC connection to your machine. Set his other card to connect to the router. Setup ICS (internet connection sharing) on his machine and allow the two cards to communicate. You should get internet. Here is Microsofts Article on using AD-HOC. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/setup/adhoc.mspx This is NOT A GOOD SYSTEM as his machine will be reduced in performance by the routing function (it does take some amount of system resources). A better solution is to either add a second Access point (not another router but an AP) which is wired back to the router. Adding an AP will give you full throughput and extend coverage but does need to be wired. You can use a wifi repeater which will extend the system. Repeaters also slow the system as they will have to receive/send/send/receive thus slowing throughput. Here are a few "repeater units" http://www.provantage.com/zoom-4401-00-00af~7ZOO9021.htm http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-Wireless-G-Range-Expander-WRE54G/dp/B00021XIJW http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=357 Sometimes just replacing the antennas on the main unit will give the coverage needed. The antennas can be replaced with better ones on some units. Add - as long as there are two adapters it should work with two wifi cards. ICS may have some issues there and I haven't done that with Win7 so don't know for that one. Like I said, that isn't really the best solution for your issue.
