Wireless Signal Boosters

Would like to know about wifi booster?

I have a laptop with WIFI and cable connection it works great in the home but when I'm in my work shop about 500 feet away from the router/my home the signal is very low, I have been told that you can buy a booster that you put on the out side of your home and it will let you go anywhere in your yard is this true and if so where do you get it and what is it called, and what do they cost?

  1. Yep they sell that at places like Best Buy and so on. They pick up your signal and boost it farther (like an extension cord for wifi signals). Just explain what you want at the store. You could also upgrade to a wireless "n" type router which has a greater range.
  2. You can get a high gain directional antenna, or a wireless repeater. http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop/ShopSearch.asp?CategoryID=259 http://www.google.co.uk/products?q=high+gain+802.11+antenna&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=7kd0Su38GsKZjAfYuOmnBg&sa=X&oi=product_result_group&ct=title&resnum=4 These links will show you some of the options, If you are extending your range, make sure you secure your network.
  3. There are a few different ways to go. You can use an "access point". You could use a "range extender". Or maybe just a better antenna for your router would work. But in your case I think the range extender would work best. Here is a link to the one I use, but there are others. This is just an example. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124037
  4. IMO, you should get another wifi access point or router for your work shop. Then connect that to your main router with an ethernet cable. I realize that this entails a lot of work but it'll work much better than a better antenna or a wifi repeater.
