Wireless Signal Boosters

WIFI boosters-do they work for outside signals?

What i want is a way to pick up free internet. From my house i get one weak connection. It works sometimes. When my cable internet isn't working i use that. I took my laptop in the car not 150 yards and found 5 or more signals. Can i put one of those boosters on my laptop and how much of a difference will it make. I mean % increase in signal strength?

1. Some signal boosters work, some do not. If you can find some at a local store, read up some reviews on the web first. You could also try a cantenna if you want to have some fun.
