Wireless Signal Boosters

Wireless Repeaters Access Point Knowledge Base

Wireless Repeaters and Wireless Access Points? My "frugal" landlord wants to extend the wireless-N signal to his house across the street which receives a "very low" signal. I read about repeaters, extenders and access points, but am not really clear on it. Any suggestions?
Is it hard to set up a Access Point/Wireless Repeater?!? AND is it possible, that i can connect my router to the wireless access point without any wires?? (BEsides power)
Wireless access point vs repeater for home networking? Which is a more reliable, faster method for extending your home networks wireless signal; using a repeater to wirelessy repeat the routers signal or setting it up as an access point and hardwiring it to the router?
Can a wireless repeater (namely a D-Link DWL-G710) be used as a wireless access point to a wired network? I have a dsl router and am adding a wireless laptop to my household. I have a D-Link DWL-G710 wireless repeater than has a LAN port on it. Can I plug the D-Link into my DSL router and have it act as a wireless access point for my laptop?
is there a wireless access point that acts as a repeater? I have a blu ray player that has BD-Live that requires an internet connection. my broadband router is 25' away but it is a router with a wireless access point. I'm wondering if there is something that I could plug into my blu ray player that will connect the blu ray to my broadband connection without having to run CAT cable. Thanks.
Wireless Access Point / Signal Enhancement? I have a bit of a project ahead of me I'm looking to Increase my Wireless signal. Being in a Basement apartment causes some grief with this issue. Now My hope is to do this for under 100$ FREE being better I have two extra routers to work with a D-Link WBR 1310 and a TRENDnet tew-432brp Now I know their old and Junk (TRENDnet) So , I was hoping to turn one of them into a Repeater , Access point, something to enhance my signal to increase my Connection for both my PC's. Any ideas on how to do this? My Primary Router is a Wirless N Cisco My end hope is to achieve at least a 80-100% connection rate for my apartment depending on my location of course. Something Gaming worthy , Stream Worthy and more importantly Backup worthy. I daily back up to an off site server I have. I welcome all Ideas, options , and Theory's alike. More then willing to attempt them. Thanks in Advance Well unfortunately the Wireless N has no external Antenna , nor does it have the ability to add one it seems. I need a situation that has no wires. This is why it's more then a typical project for me. So , unfortunately I Won't be able to use any wires with this.. My hope was to get the Wireless N to connect to one of the Standard Routers and then (essentially) bounce the signal from the router to my PC's and any other things.. Gaming Consoles etc.. So Main Floor Wireless N ---> Router G in Basement ---> PC(s)
wireless access point? once i configure a wireless access point (WAP) or wireless repeater is it a matter of just plugging it into a wall to give it power or does it need other cables? cheers
How to bridge internet to a PS3 using Wireless Access Point? hey guys... so i bought this access point to use it to take the wireless network and convert it into wired internet to be able to work on my PS3.. the guide says that there are 4 modes to use.. first mode is the "Access Point" second is the "Repeater Mode" third is the "Client Mode" and forth is the "Bridge Mode"... i am not sure which mode to use as i am confused between the client and bridge mode. Can you please tell me which mode to use? Thanks in Advance!
Can a wireless access point be used to amplify the existing wireless signal? There are no available Ethernet ports nearby. I am interested in extending by existing 802.11 B/G/N. Repeaters/Antennas/Amplifiers will not work because there are currently not compatible with 802.11-n. Can I configure an access point designed for N to amplify a signal without being connected to an Ethernet port? Because of the location, I do not plan on running any wires from my switch.
Wireless repeater? Router? Access point? Here is the scheme of my network (question will follow) Modem > > Router > > Wired to server and another desktop > In a room far away through a couple of walls, 1 laptop, 1 desktop, 1 wii and a ps3 ALL WIRELESS What i wanna do is put something in the wireless room (repeater like) but to wire everything. Something like a router that could GET the wireless signal, and distribute it through cables.. What would that be called? I'd like links if possible, or just a name.. Thanks! I do not want to put cables through the house and the access point would be in the same room as the router if it has to be wired so it's not working that way!
Help me find a good outdoor wireless access point? Can anyone help me find an Outdoor Wireless Access Point with with the following specifications? Internal Antenna 10dbi or more... External Antenna Option... Repeater Mode... Client Mode... Looking for something with good range and long lasting. Please help me find one. All suggestions are warmly welcomed. Thank you
How can i extend my wireless range for my router? Hi everyone, i have my dsl modem connected to a D-Link DI524 Wireless Router. I can get a clear signal when im downstairs (where the router is) but when i go upstairs, i still get the signal, but i frequently get drop outs. I actually read up on this online, and someone told me that i need a wireless repeater/wireless access point, so i looked around for the prices of these and they're around $120AUD. I looked on ebay and found someone selling an antenna for $26AUD, it has a 7dB gain. So im wondering if i purchase this antenna, would i be able to use the internet upstairs without getting any dropouts? Thanks in advance!
Will a wireless access point act as a repeater? I currently have a wireless router downstairs, and I don't get reception in my bedroom upstairs. I want to extend my coverage as cheaply as possible. If I buy a wireless access point like this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=200249308022&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=010 will that repeat the signal with only the need for a power cable, as if it were a repeater?
What's better to use... a Wireless Access Point or a Wireless Range Expander (Repeater).? Hi Everyone, I want to extend the wireless signal in our small office and need help on which would work better for the job, a wireless access point, or a wireless extender? Currently, here is the setup... We have a T1 line that is connected to an older Linksys WRT54GS that has two 7db antennae's. However, two of our small office rooms in the back (about 70 feet away and 6 - 8 walls in between) have a very very low signal and it often drops off. We have no servers, so the Linksys WRT54GS is used as our DHCP and assigns the IP addresses. Also, all the computers in our office are wireless, because there are no LAN ports available on the walls (i.e. building is not wired for internet). FInally, moving the Wireless Router closer to the back office rooms is not an option either, because then the front side of the office would experience the same faint signal as the back rooms do. Any ideas which is better to use? Thanks!
Wireless Access Point? I just bought 2 D-Link DAP-1353 to extend my wireless coverage. I have been having a lot of trouble setting it up. I want to string the access points together and take the coverage from one end of the house to the other. In the web based utility it has a lot of options. These include: Access Point WDS with Access Point WDS AP Repeater AP client Also what channel do I set it on and what should the SSID be. Should these be the same as my router. I got the repeater mode working but it seems to be edgy. The access point I set it to the same channel and SSID as my router and it took my wireless network down.
What is the best wireless repeater for linksys router.? I need to know the best bang for the buck im also curious if anyone knows if the ZOOM 4400 Wireless Access Point + Wireless Gaming Adapter + Repeater is any good.
Wireless internet, router, access point, or repeater? In my county, we have free wireless internet, but the signal does not come to our house, what do I need to boost the signal?
Anyone know anything about wireless repeaters?? I'm trying to do inventory and my wireless connection doesn't reach the far end of my office building. I've heard I can buy a repeater that will kind of extend the signal, or something?? We have a wireless access point that we use for the staff side of our network, so I need something that's compatible with a WAP. Any ideas?? I'm at my wit's end with this freaking issue!!
How can I set-up a single Wireless SSID with several access points? Notice how several large college/university and business campuses have a single SSID network throughout the entire community? Local to me, the City of Mountain View, California has a city-wide system that is operated by Google! I want something similar in my large home - where there is more than one access point, but a single SSID that is shared by all the access points. Wireless access point manufacturers, such as D-Link, tell me that my only options are different wireless access points with different SSIDs or a wireless repeater (which repeats a signal, so also reduces signal strength and speed). But this is obviously incorrect as numerous places have different access points that share one SSID. How is this done?
Anyone know how to setup an Access point and a Wireless Client so it can grab dhcp? There seems to be some problems in my setup of a wifi access point, can any of you lend a hand with a conflict that is keeping the receiving end of my network from aquiring addresses via DHCP? I have a house with cable modem, I attached a router w/dhcp for my home network, the router's LAN IP is 10.1.10.1. I then decided to buy a couple of antennas and send the signal to another house of mine about 1/2 mile away. I bought an Alcon AP/Wireless Bridge/Repeater and hooked up a sweet antenna in my first house. Then I grabbed a different Alcon antenna/AP/wireless bridge/repeater/wireless client for the second house. I have the first alcon device set to be an Access Point so I can use wifi all around my house. It has a static ip set 10.1.10.66 The 'receiving' Alcon is set to be a wireless client, it's IP is set to 10.1.10.67. At the second house I have the Alcon connecting to a switch which feeds a few computers. None of these computers can get a DHCP ip address. If I manually assign IP's in the range that House 1's router is familiar with then they work no problem. For instance 10.1.10.241 statically set on a pc in home 2 will connect and work on the internet just fine. However when I put it to DHCP, it does the 169.254 IP address, meaning it can't get one. I have checked my DHCP router and confirmed that I have enough DHCP client spaces available. Any ideas out there? You guys have surprised me before with some random requests so I figured I woudl try. I have a rough network map posted on my website http://thecomputerace.com/cc/wireless.PNG
Wireless Access Point problem? Hi! I just bought a wireless access point TP-link TL-WA801ND and I have set it up as a repeater of my router up stairs. I'm using it to give my old xbox a wireless connection when directly connected to the AP. It works but only when I disable my routers password leaving it open to anyone. I tried to lock it to a particular mac address but it doesnt work. I want to still have internet access downstairs through my AP but with the password on the router. Does anyone have any advice?
Can i hook a router or a wireless access point directly to the ethernet port? Getting a repeater won't work because there is no wireless but other people have wireless i just don't know how they did it, the ethernet port is a little box on the wall in which you plug an ethernet cord into that and then to your laptop, i was wondering if i could plug it into a router or wireless access point instead to get wireless internet in my room and if so would i have to have my laptop on all the time for the router to work? So would i use a router or a wireless access point for this?
Could some one please explain the difference between Universal Repeater and an Access point? Last week I bought a new Wireless range extender, and in the cover they write it can be used as both Universal repeater and the Access point. Actually what is the difference and its use.
Connecting to Wireless Hotspots? I have a holiday apartment where there are lots of wifi hotspots but I can only reach them with an outdoor antenna on my balcony which I connect to the antenna point of a usb wifi adapter How and what could I connect the antenna to so that I could connect wirelessly. The whole world of routers, extenders, repeaters, wireless bridges, wireless access points etc is comletely baffling me! Reecious, thanks for your reply. My problem is not that I can not "afford" internet access in my apartment. There simply isn't any regardless of cost ! (No phone lines or cable in the complex) The whole point of an antenna is to make me not "too far away"
Need Help - Wireless G LAN Diagram.? We have 2 buildings about 100 meters apart, each building has about 20 to 30 PCs. Our internet broadband router is in building 1, now my problem is, what should i need so that PCs in building 1 and 2 can have access in the internet. Im just confused about access points, wireless boosters, repeaters etc etc. Do I need to install repeaters or access points in each of the buildings? I need a detailed Wireless LAN Diagram for this purpose, need help. Building 1 has 8 rooms (standard size) and building 2 has 10 rooms (standard size) PCs in each building are distributed in that rooms. Thank you in advance.
Converting a wireless router to a wireless repeater? I have a wireless router down stairs that is currently plugged into the modem. I have a second router in my bedroom that is not connected to the internet, but is running a network in my room. I want to connect my bedroom network to the downstairs network, and running cables is not an option. Basically I want to have a second access point, but I can't run a cable from the bedroom to the office. I was wondering if there was a way I could receive the signal from the office in the bedroom and re-broadcast it. I can only think of doing this with a wireless repeater, but even at that, do repeaters have ethernet ports on them? If so, can I catch the office signal on the repeater, and run it through an ethernet cable to my bedroom router? I don't mind having wires in my bedroom, I can hide those, but I can't really run a wire to the office. Also, if I do use a repeater as mentioned above, will my router still work as a wireless access point? Currently I have my bedroom router hard-wired to the office router, and the bedroom router has DHCP off, and since i turned it off, i can't access the wireless signal from it. Silly questions I know, but If I could get some help it would be greatly appreciated. I have DHCP turned off on the upstairs router, and i have the downstairs router plugged into the upstairs router via a long ethernet running through the house. I can access the internet this way, and am doing so now. What exactly is a powerline network adapter though? Are you talking about a device that plugs into the wall, catches the downstairs signal, and sends it through ethernet to the upstairs router? Man I wish we could draw diagrams on here... I would understand this in 2 seconds with a simple picture.
Can you have a single wireless network with multiple access points? I have a 4 port wireless g dlink router, and im considering getting 2 compatable dlink access points My intention is to basiclly setup a triangle of wireless receivers around my house so i will always have good signal wherever I go. I will have the main router in one spot, and 2 wireless access points in 2 different spots. I plan on having thoes 2 AP's wired into the router using 2 of the ports. My question is will this create a singular wireless network throughout the whole house utilizing all 3 receivers? Or will they conflict with eachother and not work at all? or will they all have to be seperatly configured making 3 different networks the computer has to choose from? To note: im not interested in repeaters, I want the AP's to be wired so there is no signal degradation or half bandwidth. I also know wireless N is better, but should i upgrade to that i would want to do the same thing to make a ridiculously good signal either way.
How do I set up my dlink as an access point / repeater? I live in an apartment complex and we have 4 apartments sharing one wireless router. The main router is in the first apartment, and I'm three doors down, so the signal is weak for me. I would like to strengthen it by setting up an access point / repeater. The main router is a netgear WGR614 and the one I would like to use in my apartment as the access point or repeater is a D-Link DIR-655. Obviously I can't run any ethernet cords between the two routers. How can I set this network up!? Help!! RIght I'm gonna need more details than that.... and what you said to look into doesn't support either one of these routers.
How can I setup a Access Point to Repeater with password security? I have a 2 WAP54G AP. My problem is I want to boost up the signal of my default AP in our house and it is password protect for us to secure the network and internet connection. I followed the instruction on how to setup a repeater to an access point. It didn't connect at all. Then I restore my default AP and disable the wireless password protection. I setup also my repeater and it works but the problem is my network and internet connect has been unprotected. how can I secure both my default AP and the AP the I setup as a repeater?
Help needed configuring Linksys Wireless-B "BEFW11S4" as a second router or access point? I currently have Linksys Wireless-G "WRT54G" (A) connecting to the Comcast modem. It works perfectly in my room. I am trying to share the internet with my friend, but his room is a little bit far to get the signal. We have another Linksys Wireless-B "BEFW11S4" (B) that we are trying to set it up as the second router or access point. It does not matter if it is going to be wireless or wired network in his room as long as he can access to the Internet. Below are some info of the main router (A): Local IP address: 192.168.2.1 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 DHCP Server: Enable Starting IP address: 192.168.2.100 DDNS: Disable Operating Mode: Gateway By the way, I found a guide on eHow (http://www.ehow.com/how_2308651_use-router-as-repeater.html) but I could not find a place to change the operating mode on the second router. Thanks in advance.
how can i setup my old router as a repeater/access point? i have a Linksys E1000 wireless N router hooked up to my cable modem in my house. I have a very large property though and i would like to be able to use my laptop out by the pool. I have a garage on my property with power which gets decent signal, but not great. Is there any way I could use my old router, a DLink DIR-625, and place it in my garage to extend the signal. I want to do this wirelessly though, I dont want to run a LAN cable out there. I would appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks
Help with router/access point compatibility.? Hello. I have a Netgear RangeMax WPN82v3 router and soon I will have a Linksys WAP54g Access point (for free) and was wondering if the access point will work as a repeater from the netgear modem. I do know that it will work wired, but im looking for the access point to be wireless. Any help would be appreciated, thank you!
How to set up my wireless? i have a router in my house and i want to get the signal to the garage. its approximately 240-280 ft. distance. would a regular wireless card do the trick? i was talking to a frys electronics employee and he said i need a repeater and an access point possibly 2 repeaters and itll cost roughly 200+ dollars and that seems rather high for such a short distance. plz help.
Trying to extend university wi-fi into my apartment/ Router/Bridge/Access Point/Repeater setup? Here's the deal. I'm a student and I live in an apartment with a balcony, which is right next door to a university building that has wi-fi access that I can log into. The signal strength is only strong enough to actually connect to the internet if my laptop is on one corner of the balcony. I would really like to get this wi-fi access inside of my apartment. Ideally, I want to setup a router/device to detect the wi-fi signal and extend it wirelessly into my apartment. If I had to use an ethernet cable from the device to my laptop, I'm willing to do that to. I have a Linksys BEFW11S4 Wireless-B Router and a Belkin Wireless G Router F5D7230-4 ver. 7001. I am using Windows 7. I know nothing about setting up routers or how I should configure IP address, TCP/IP stuff, DHCN, WDS, blah, blah, blah. It's gibberish to me. I also don't have any user manuals or setup CD's for either router. If you have any advice and some patience, please give me some instructions as if I'm a 4th grader. I'm pretty technically incline, but I don't know shit about networks, routers, etc. Thanks very very much, Andy (a.k.a. hopelessly lost)
can someone tell me how to create a wireless atmosphere through out my house? I need to set up some kind of access point or repeater from this computer so we can have wireless downstairs for other pc, playstation and such, I can only pick up father-in-laws internet from upstairs next to window ok, I know that much, but do I need a repeater or access point???And how do you configure it??
Disabling DHCP on a wireless router? Hi, I have 2 routers on my network, one wired and one wireless, and I simply want to disable the DHCP on the wireless router and use it as a repeater (and also a switch and wireless access point). How do you go about disabling the DHCP on a Linksys router (WRT160Nv2?)

Hi I have a Amped wireless AP600EX and I put the wrong firm ware update in to it there is a repeater and a access point and I put the repeater one in sooooooo yaww umm is there any way to use a utility or some thing to put the right one back in the web interface dos not work but the funny thing the lights come on it transmits and windows sees it and is like hay this thing isn't set up you want to and it works but i want to use the web interface to do the advanced things I bought it for thanks guys
Help extending my wireless range!!? I have a netgear wndr3700 dual band n wireless router and also a netgear wndhe111 wireless n access point, i only use mac computers, both have os x 10.6.2 snow leopard how would i be able to extend my wireless range or use the access point as a repeater, i also have a netgear wnp824v2 and an apple airport extreme base station(the mushroom), can someone give me some insight?
Setting up network - what repeater/hardware do u recommend? Went to set up wireless network; but the router and the connecting computer are too far away from each other. Looking for recommendations on all three pieces, the access point, wireless card and repeater. Can anyone make recommendation so that we get a nice cohesive network? Would like to stay with one manufacturer in order to avoid finger pointing (ie Netgear saying the linksys repeater is the issue.) THX
My apt.provides free WAPs (exc. connection/11Mbps). VERY SLOW however. How can I speed it up-repeaters, etc.? My new apt. complex provides free Internet Wireless Access Points through Wavelength. I have excellent signal quality with 11.0 Mbps. The service is much slower than I am used to. How can I increase the speed - through my own repeater, etc.? Thanks for any suggestions.
I have a router and want to connect an access point to it acting as a repeater? now my question is would this be a good choice for online gaming (ps3) this is the router i have http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-WRT54GS-Wireless-G-Broadband-SpeedBooster/dp/B0001D3K8A and this is the access point im thinking of buying http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124353
Networking advice. This one's a bit tricky...? I'm trying to get my wifi signal out to a trailer I'm using as a workshop. I'm using a trendnet TEW-691GR wireless N router, which broadcasts in both 450 Mbs and 300 Mbs, and I'm using a Linksys WMP300n wireless antenna on the server in my trailer. I'm trying to use that internet connection on other devices in the trailer, either by Ethernet switch or wireless repeater/bridge/access point. using dhcp, i can get my other devices to recognize the network, but not any of the other computers on that network. the server using the router is only reading it as a wireless G connection, even though the router is only broadcasting in wireless N, not b/g/n. my goal is to have internet to every device in the trailer. I have an ethernet switch, a router programmed to act like a bridge/repeater, 2 cat 5e Ethernet cables and 1 cat 6 crossover cable. I need to connect an xbox 360, a desktop, and a laptop to my custom built server with a 100Mb/s onboard network card. i need to get the internet connection from my pci wifi antenna to that onboard network card. anybody know how to route this properly? the intention is I have internet on one device in the trailer. I'm trying to distribute it to the rest of my devices. the router is in the house, a second router, programmed to act as a wireless repeater/bridge, is in the trailer, along with a 5-port Ethernet switch.
I have a wireless network and a wired network. I want to extend my wireless range.? ok I have a cable modem, plugged into my wireless router. This provides 5 cabled ports and my wireless signal. One of the network cables runs from one side of the house to the other side where the wireless signal is weak, so I just use the network cable. I want to use wireless in this side of the house. What is the best way to do this. Do I a) by another wireless router and configure it as a repeater and or b) by another wireless router and plug it in to the network cable and configure it as a Wireless access point. To do this do I need to configure it with the same network SSID and encryption key as the existing wireless network or do I set it up as a new Wireless network. Also Will this pass through the DHCP from the original router or will this need to be setup? Im an experience IT professional, just don't have much wireless experience, so should be able to follow your answers. Thanks My house is built in stone and is terrible for wifi signals. Thats why I ran a cable from 1 side to another. But the wife wants wireless....and what the wife wants....
which wireless router has the most range? Is there a wireless "repeater" available that I could put halfway between my access point and my PC?
Which long-range wireless router do you recommend? Hi, I am looking for a high range wireless router, does not matter if it's G or N, what's I'm looking for is wireless coverage. I have no N devices, I have 2 computers, one netbook and an iPod Touch, all of them use the G protocol. Right now I have a belkin F5D7230-4, which provides basic coverage with only one antenna, about 30 feet with walls and obstacles until the connection quality reaches "low", maybe I will use this one as a repeater/access point. So I need brand and router model, I think Linksys is a very good option buy I've heard D-Link newest routers have greater range so I am pretty undecided, next week I'll be buying it. Thanks
Belkin router as access point? I'm currenty in Spain using an ADSL Telefonica router for my connection. The signal does not reach all sections of my house. I have a Belkin N 150 that is supposed to be able to act as an access point. I configured the WDS settings on the Telefonica router to allow the WLAN MAC of the Belkin to access it. I disabled DHCP on the belkin, and gave it an available IP. I set up WPA2 and manually entered the key info on the belkin. It also is set up with the same SSID. I can't wireless connect to the belkin at all. When it is CAT-5 connected to the telefonica I can "see" it via it's IP address in a browser. I plugged the belkin in the middle of the house. I know it's broadcasting because I lose the telefonica signal on the other side of the house, and then I pick up the same SSID (previously configured on the belkin) at full strength. I did a firmware update on the belkin, March 2010, but couldn't find one on the telefonica, Sep 08. Models- Belkin F6D4230-4 V1, Telefonica Xavi 7698. I want the Belkin to sit in the middle of the house and repeat the signal to the other end as the telefonica fades. I know I can purchase a repeater/network extender/"real access point"...But can the current setup work??
Would a wireless repeater act as a firewall or secure an otherwise unsecured network? My neighbor across the street is using an unsecured wireless network. I am trying to use his wireless connection (with his permission, of course, and letting him know that netflix streaming and gaming will take up a big chunk of his bandwidth), however the signal is very weak considering he is using an 802.11g router/modem combination from across the street. I've been considering getting a wireless repeater to extend and strengthen the signal, since my computers rarely see signal strength over -85dbm and the connections time out more often than not. There is an area of the house that gets a signal strength closer to -65dbm (Windows just sees it as "good" strength - I got these statistics using inSSIDer) and I'm thinking of setting up the repeater there. I realize that a repeater acts as its own access point, with a unique SSID, WEP/WPA encryption, and IP address. But since it is originally connected to his "linksys" network, will that matter? Will access still be enabled through the original network, or will this be more like a walled-off encrypted subset of that network, or will it become its own network altogether that merely uses the original network as a gateway? I know most of the people in my neighborhood (ie old and computer illiterate) don't know the necessary commands, and while I do know them, I have no interest in seeing pictures of peoples' grandchildren, cats, and fetish porn. The commands are simple and I'm more concerned with wardriving. I have intimate photos shared with my fiancee and do all my banking and shopping over the internet. I do, of course, also have Windows firewall enabled, which helps somewhat. Let me rephrase the question a bit more simply. When on a public network, you can privatize your network activity fairly securely by setting up a virtual private network (VPN). I want to know if setting up the wireless repeater as an access point with its own unique SSID and WPA2 encryption would more or less create a VPN inside my neighbor's public network.
How can i increase the wireless internet signal in my apartment?? How do I increase the wireless signal strength in my apartment? Our building has some sort of wireless set up for everyone to use...we are on the ground level and the signal isnt that good. We have a router is there anyway to turn it into a repeater or something to get better signal? The Access Point is owned by the apartment complex and I a)dont know where it is b)dont think im allowed to modify it. Can I use the linksys router i currently own to repeat or boost the signal in anyway
Would this work?(Router and wireless internet laptop)? Right now, one of my laptops is running Windows XP with a wireless internet connection to another router(no usb adapters). Is it possible to hook up a wireless repeater(in this case, im using one of my other routers as one) to the laptop so it can act as an access point or do I need a modem for it? If so, how?
How to extend my wireless network? I currently have a Netgear WGR614v6 (http://www.netgear.com/Products/RoutersandGateways/WirelessGRouters/WGR614.aspx) in my house. My buddies and I use my Xbox 360 and the Xbox wireless adapter to connect to this access point - however, we play in my garage (don't ask why) which is probably 200 - 250 feet away from the access point. Our online games are lagging bad. Is there a way to extend the network wirelessly. The only thing that makes this difficult is that if we set up a wireless repeater we would be sacrificing a lot of bandwidth. If the above is not possible, is there a router that would be able to give my xbox a fast enough connection that I could play online? Ok, let me clarify. Running a cable is not an option. I am looking for a fix that will cost less than $50. Moving my router will not help. I cannot put anything any closer. They AP and the Xbox are in 2 different buildings with a large distance between. I am looking for something that I could possibly plug into my router and set on the same desk to give me more range.
How can I extend my network? I have a wireless router + modem, Belkin: http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=273526 I have a cable connecter from the router to my PC in my room ( 30 meters) the wireless range does not reach my room, now, I want to connect other devices to the network/Internet like wii, ps3 and other stuff. I want to connect both, wireless and wired devices, DHCP support as well. What kind of device do I need? access point? wireless router? wireless modem? repeater?
How to wireless connect a Wireless Router to a Wireless Access Point to extend range (repeater) of Signal ? Wireless Router is D-Link AirPlus G DI-524 802.11g/ 2.4 GHz and the Wireless Access Point is D-Link AirPlus Xtreme G DWL-2100AP 802.11g Wireless 108Mbps. Thanks.
What's the difference between a WIRELESS ROUTER VS. a WIRELESS ACCESS POINT that is also a BRIGE & a REPEATER? I have just one computer and the DSL modem is currently plugged into it, and it works great but I recently bought an iPhone that has Wi-Fi and want to be able to use the iPhone with my DSL. Will a WIRELESS ACCESS POINT with BRIGE and REPEATER together do the trick? because it seems a lot cheaper. Thank you all in advance!
What are the 3 main wireless components? A transceiver, radio waves, and a segment A receiver, a repeater, and a bridge A repeater, radio waves, and an access point Antennas, A WNIC, and a bridge
connect win xp to mulitple wireless networks? Having problems connecting winxp to netgear wg102 access point. I have to remove then add the ssid to get access. I have 2 wg102's both setup with not to broadcast ssid, Network Authentication wpa-psk, and data encription tkip. I did try to setup access points in repeater mode but that did not work. So they are setup as individual access points to the same IP network (different ssid's). I am in a 3 floor building and I have one access point on the 3rd floor and one on the 1st floor.
Computer Help? The network administrator for a marketing company is concerned about the performance of the network. A company technician discovers a high volume of network traffic between PCs and the departmental media server. Which two devices could be used to divide the network and improve performance? (Choose TWO.) A - bridge B - hub C - repeater D - switch E - wireless access points Another question, is there a way I can send a message to an individual that replies to my question? Well, I'm replying the same way to everyone: Come on, you can't honestly tell me that this kind of stuff is useful. This stuff is pure stupid and only hardware freaks are interested in knowing how many pins some wire has.
What hardware do I need to set up a wireless network? The first one is probably Wireless Router (Which one you recommend?) Wireless Router Option: D-Link - DIR-300/E Linksys - WAP54G Belkin - Wireless G Router - F5D7230-4 Asus - WL-520gC TP-Link - TL-WR542G 3Com - 3CRWER10075 AP+ Router 4 Port Prolink - WGR 1004 The second is probably Wireless LAN PCI Adapter or Compact Wireless-G USB Adapter (Which one you recommend?) LINKSYS WMP54G or LINKSYS WUSB54GC Do I need a repeater? What is Access Point? Do I need one?
Multiple routers from 1 DSL line? Hey, so my house runs on a single DSL connection (Bleh, I know, but my parents don't want to shell out for Cable). We have a Qwest DSL modem that feeds the house Ethernet lines. It comes with a built-in WIreless Gateway, but the signal isn't near strong enough, I connected a Linksys Wireless-N Gigabit router (the best one I could buy) to the house Ethernet line. The problem is, we're in an old 1920's house with thick plaster walls, and the signal is still spotty at best. How can I get strong, reliable signal? I was thinking either A) Use a series of repeaters to spread the signal or B) Setting up a router or wireless access point on each floor, each connected into the house Ethernet. Thanks for your time and suggestions! Oh, and also: if I were to plug in a router on each floor, could they cooperate to broadcast 1 WLAN network? Or would each require its own network (and SSID)? Can I even do that with our 1 DSL line from Qwest? *I work for the IT dept. at my college, and I'd say I'm a seasoned intermediate in networking. One more thing: my family has both Mac's and PC's that need access, and though they all get 802.11a/b/g, only some are n-capable, so the router broadcasts a mixed (a,b,g, and n) signal on standard band channel 7 and wide-band channel 9. Note- I intend to disable the router capabilities of the modem (indeed, it sucks) and unfortunately the antenna for my Linksys router is entirely internal, so I can't alter it. (Unless of course I disassemble it, void the warranty, and try to guess at the correct piece of equipment.)
Which is the best G wireless router for a big Concrete house? hi i live in a 1 floor house. Its shaped more or less like a letter l. and it is constructed with a lot of concrete. i first bought a Linksys WRT54G... worked perfectly...sadly it fell really hard and died. wanted to buy the same but couldn't find it. So i had to try some new ones. I had bought: Belkin Wireless G Plus MIMO Router ( i would lost connection every 10 mnts) , Linksys N Ultra ( thinking it would have a better G or B perfomance......sucks)... I dnt care the cost... I just want a wireless router that can let me get a very good signal strength while crossing at least 1 wall. I dont prefer the ones with integrated antennas... I dont know if i have to buy another access point or a repeater ...... I wouldn;t mind combing Wired stuff with wireless.... the goal is a "very Good" and able to play PS3 and Xbox 360 online at the same time.... there are 5 laptops and a dekstop.. Rember is a heavy concrete/ brick house so it as to be powerful
Need help setting up Access Point!!? Hello, I just bought a Trendnet AP and don't know how to install it... I bought it to extend the signal of my wireless router (yes I've read the manual, but the instructions are crap). I'm wanting to set it up as a repeater... My questions are.. does the AP SSID need to be the same as the router SSID? Also, does the AP need to have the same IP as the wireless router?? How about the channel? Thanks.
My router doesnt has an internet connection please help? my neighbor shared us their internet using a router(cable). So only 1 computer has an internet connection but we have 2 computers. So we bought a wireless router (Thomson). It has 3 modes. access point mode, client mode, repeater mode. I used the access point mode. My computers are connected to the router but no internet connection. What should i do to make it working ?
How can I make my BT HomeHub into a bridge? BT have just sent me a BT HomeHub 2.0 which is now the main wireless access point. I also have a Netgear WG602v2 Wireless Access Point which I need to make in to a Repeater, so that I can extend the range of my BT HomeHub to the loft, where the signal is a little low. Besides, it seems a shame to put a good enough Netgear WG602v2 Wireless Access Point, which Netgear still sell for around £50, to waste. I have tried putting the MAC address into the Netgear Wireless Access Point but it can't seem to find the BT HomeHub What am I doing wrong? Surely it is possible to add a Repeater to the BT HomeHub? Thanks! The netgear wirelessaccess point can do this fine, but i'm just not too sure about the BT HomeHub, it looks like a pile of poo!
Wireless Routers, Access Points, Repeaters? They are essentially the same hardware, are they not? Can you mod/hack just about any router to repeat the signal or must you buy so-called repeaters to do that? I have a Linksys WRT54GX2 MIMO router with fixed antennas. I need to direct the signal to a structure several hundreds of feet away. Will modding the antennas with DIY parabolic reflector work or just screw up the echo tech of this device? Is there a better way to modify/replace the antennas that are said to be non-replaceable? Should I ditch this router altogether for something like the WRT54G V.4 or below to take advantage of Linux hacks and replaceable antennas? I'm looking at repeaters but they are generally pricey. Access Points and Routers abound for much less and I cannot understand why that is since they appear on the surface to be the same type of hardware.
Need help planning a networking joke/prank? Ok, a few of us want to plan a joke for when things get slow...we work for the college tech support and networking services departments. They have a way of tracking and triangulating rogue APs down using the APs that host the campus wireless. Here's our idea -- like a high-tech hide-and-seek game: 1. one (or more) of us get some APs and configure them for same (or different) SSIDs 2. we put them in back-packs and wonder around campus (randomly) while others' are trying to "triangulate" the location of the "rogues" 3. then, we may (or may not) randomley turn them on/off and change the SSIDs to make it even harder Obviously, these won't actually provide anything if someone connected - it would just be like spare routers not connected to anything but power. So here's what we haven't worked out: -How are we going to power these for an extended time? -How will we do this without spending money (we only have 2 spare APs/Routers) I've built a device to power my repeater/access-point for about an hour off AA batteries but it took several weeks (to get the high/low battery fail-safes and status indicatiors working) and costs quite a bit to construct. If there's a way to make a laptop look like an AP, we can scrape up a number of spares from storage for the day... So what do you all think?
How do I use my wireless router as a WiFi repeater? There is a nearby wifi access point, but not near enough. I want to configure my wireless router to sit in the middle and wirelessly be on the existing wireless network and extend its range so that my laptop can be on that network, too, even though it would otherwise be too far away. I have a Linksys WRT54AB with Linksys firmware, though I'm happy to install other firmware if it would help.
How far can my router be from my modem? i currently own two houses side by side. My son and his girlfriend are living in one. Now my question is how far can a router be from the modem. The modem is in the far end of the house closest to the one he lives in. from window to window it is 106 ft. if i run 120ft of cat 5 cable from my modem out of the house and bury it in the ground and have it come up into the other house to a wireless router will the signal be ample enough for them to connect to the internet on their pcs???? I do not want to use a repeater or access point unless i absolutley need to. Thank you for any responses on this topic.
how to share broadband internet connection ? I have broadband internet connection , which uses user name and password , I have two access points one for my desktop set as client and the other one is set as repeater which makes the wireless connection available in all my house and I use it for connecting from PSP and laptop but the problem is that I can't use the internet at the same time when i'm using it on desktop it says on the others wrong user name or password , any ideas how can I use it at the same time.
sharing an internet connection over wi-fi? i have a few machines at home i want to share a connection with, basically my access point cannot be moved and the signal does not carry through to the far side of my house so i want to be able to share/extend the connection from my PC to my laptop. the setup looks as follows: Wireless Router >>>>>> PC (Vista&XP) >>>>>> Laptop (XP) i really don't want to use a repeater or second router between the laptop and access point so all help is appreciated.
