Do any wireless repeater work with a Belkin Adaptor? I have really crappy wifi since my room is across the house from my wireless adaptor. I was going to get a new antenna and a wireless repeater to get the wifi to my room. What I need to know is, can you get any wireless repeater from a different company other then Belkin? Also, do you have any other good ideas to get better wifi?
How can i extend my wireless signal for free? I usually go like three houses down the road with my laptop to a friends house. But my wireless signal doesn't go that far. It reaches but its really poor signal and it will connect but then it keeps disconnecting and reconnecting. I don't have any money to buy any wireless repeater or anything like that. I already have extended antennas on the router but their just not doing the job. So I was just wondering if their is any free way to extended the signal and do it for free?
Can a wireless access point be used to amplify the existing wireless signal? There are no available Ethernet ports nearby. I am interested in extending by existing 802.11 B/G/N. Repeaters/Antennas/Amplifiers will not work because there are currently not compatible with 802.11-n. Can I configure an access point designed for N to amplify a signal without being connected to an Ethernet port? Because of the location, I do not plan on running any wires from my switch.
How can I extend my Linksys wireless range? PLEASE HELP!? This question is different than most because of the circumstances. Heres the scoop. I live with my father in his home and he owns his own business across the street from where we live. We have rigged up the wireless so that the businesses wireless internet signal reaches over to our house and we can get enough of a signal to have some descent high speed internet, and online gaming. but the items recieving the signal (comuters, gaming systems) must be on one side of the house. Please help me out here, what would be the best way to extend the signal so the rest of the house is covered be the signal across the street? A huge antenna? Wireless repeaters? extenders? I can't seem to find a good answer anywhere because nobody is dumb enough to get internet this way. lol. thanks for the help!
LONG RANGE wireless internet? Okay, i have a shop that is next too the road. my house is 450ft behind the shop. i want to get highspeed internet to my house, but their is a problem, to have the phone company install it directly to the house is gonna set me back over $3000 now, my plan: 1. have them install the highspeed internet in the shop 2. get a long range antenna to send the signal from the shop to another antenna on the house 3. run a cord from the antenna on the house to a router inside the house this is the antenna i was thinking about getting http://cgi.ebay.com/1-2Mile-802-11b-g-USB-CPE-Antenna-Wireless-Repeater_W0QQitemZ110158269509QQihZ001QQcategoryZ61816QQcmdZViewItem i know i am going to need 2 of them, one to recieve the signal (one on the house) and one to send the signal (one on the shop) now what else will i need to do this? please send me a list of how to do it, and if you have any better iideas let me know if the reply is long, you can send it to my email, punkisbetter2003@hotmail.com
wireless repeater and/or high power wifi antenna? im trying to connect my laptop to my sister in law's wifi next door. will a wireless repeater work better over a high power wifi antenna with my lap top. can i use a hi power antenna connected to the wireless repeater?
Wireless Internet Over A Large Area? I've been asked to set up wireless internet access for a wealthy family nearby. They would like to be able to access it all over their property, which is about 5 square acres. There's a main house, guest house, and a barn which has been converted into a large pool cabana. They want to be able to surf while next to the pool, or if they are in the guest house. The internet is currently hooked up in the basement of the main house. They claim money is no object in completing this task, but I'm not sure what the best solution would be. Wireless router with repeaters? or maybe just a commercial quality wireless antenna? I'm not even sure if you can buy one of those. Most important access would be next to the pool, which is about 100 yards from the house. Any suggestions?
How can i extend my wireless range for my router? Hi everyone, i have my dsl modem connected to a D-Link DI524 Wireless Router. I can get a clear signal when im downstairs (where the router is) but when i go upstairs, i still get the signal, but i frequently get drop outs. I actually read up on this online, and someone told me that i need a wireless repeater/wireless access point, so i looked around for the prices of these and they're around $120AUD. I looked on ebay and found someone selling an antenna for $26AUD, it has a 7dB gain. So im wondering if i purchase this antenna, would i be able to use the internet upstairs without getting any dropouts? Thanks in advance!
Anyone know how to setup an Access point and a Wireless Client so it can grab dhcp? There seems to be some problems in my setup of a wifi access point, can any of you lend a hand with a conflict that is keeping the receiving end of my network from aquiring addresses via DHCP? I have a house with cable modem, I attached a router w/dhcp for my home network, the router's LAN IP is 10.1.10.1. I then decided to buy a couple of antennas and send the signal to another house of mine about 1/2 mile away. I bought an Alcon AP/Wireless Bridge/Repeater and hooked up a sweet antenna in my first house. Then I grabbed a different Alcon antenna/AP/wireless bridge/repeater/wireless client for the second house. I have the first alcon device set to be an Access Point so I can use wifi all around my house. It has a static ip set 10.1.10.66 The 'receiving' Alcon is set to be a wireless client, it's IP is set to 10.1.10.67. At the second house I have the Alcon connecting to a switch which feeds a few computers. None of these computers can get a DHCP ip address. If I manually assign IP's in the range that House 1's router is familiar with then they work no problem. For instance 10.1.10.241 statically set on a pc in home 2 will connect and work on the internet just fine. However when I put it to DHCP, it does the 169.254 IP address, meaning it can't get one. I have checked my DHCP router and confirmed that I have enough DHCP client spaces available. Any ideas out there? You guys have surprised me before with some random requests so I figured I woudl try. I have a rough network map posted on my website http://thecomputerace.com/cc/wireless.PNG
need a repeater for my wireless router or possible a better antenna? my two furthest devices get a signal where they are but have to be orientated so their antennas are in the line of sight. i am getting really good range from the router (about 150ft, two walls and a window) i need to up the signal just a bit and dont want to drop a whole lot of cash doing it. just looking for some ideas
I share internet with my neighbor, but my connection is spotty, any suggestions? I have considered a wireless repeater, a directional antenna, and a wireless antenna that you can I can plug into my USB/ ethernet port. I dont want to monopolize my neighbor's computer for longer that I have to, and I know from experience repeaters can take hours to set up. How long does it take to install a directional antenna? And how effective are personal antennas? Any other suggestions? i split the bill 50/50 with my neihbor, which is why I would have access to his comp in order to set up an antenna..dont be unnecessarily accusatory the neighbor lives about 70 yards away, but there are only 2 walls in between us
How can i extend my WIFI network to my guest house? I have internet service on the main house and a N router, but the signal doesn't get to the guest house which is about 40 yards away. I was looking at some external antennas, but i don't think just adding an antenna to the router will be enough, because i don't think the signal from the devices in the guest house would reach the router's antenna even if the signal from the router reaches the devices... The other problem is that the walls are about 1ft thick concrete, so regular indoor repeaters don't work too well here. I was looking at this outdoor wireless antenna/repeater (HAWKING HOW2R1), but it seems a little too expensive since i would need to place 2 (one in the main house to boost the signal, and one in the guest house to get the signal from the main house and catch/transmit the signal from devices in the guest house). I think i may be over complicating it... Does anybody know any other cheaper and simpler way that may work here? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks. Thanks for the replies so far! :) I don't really want to run a cable because with the sunny weather here, i think i might have to replace it every other week. I looked into the home made, and commercial antennas, but the problem is getting the signal from the devices in the guest house (laptop, iphone, etc) to reach the router's antenna 40 yards away :/
Slingbox using a wireless repeater? I'm going overseas to set up my first Slingbox hopefully successfully. I plan to set up at my parents house, using my sister's wireless LAN signal. She lives next door, and has very limited space, and I don't want to bug her too much. She already gave me wireless network password, so no problem. Questions: is it possible to set up Slinbox with wireless repeater to sling regular antenna signal??? Thanks. B. Help me find a good outdoor wireless access point? Can anyone help me find an Outdoor Wireless Access Point with with the following specifications? Internal Antenna 10dbi or more... External Antenna Option... Repeater Mode... Client Mode... Looking for something with good range and long lasting. Please help me find one. All suggestions are warmly welcomed. Thank you
I'm so confused about setting up a home network? I've been looking at an outdoor wireless repeater, antennas, and just burying a cable using a splitter, two routers and a modem. However tonight I went into Best Buy and talked with one of their "Geek Squad" people and they said that burying the cable would slow the internet connection at the second point (which is roughly 300 ft away). They suggested a bridge (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Cisco+Linksy… to me and said that this would work better, but to access the internet at Point B, I would have to plug into it, so I would have to run the Ethernet cable from to to my laptop. I'm not very techie at all, but I'm a fast learner, so if someone could just please point me in the right direction of a cost efficient way to achieve this, I would be thankful. Essentially, what I'm trying to to is keep the modem and a router hooked up in the main house while having internet access to an outbuilding that is about 300 ft away. Thanks!
can i use netgear wgt624 v3 router as a wireless repeater? i share internet with my neighbor via my802.11g wireless card. he is the one who broadcast his road runner to me with netgear router for a small fee. can i use a spare netgear router to boost signal and if so how? i cannot plug into his router via ethernet. i need to use my antenna to recieve signal then boost or use router as antenna and boost.
Should I get a wireless repeater? My house is one-story, old, has wooden floors, stone and wood walls, a stone chimney, doesn't support powerline products, and has no wired ethernet. I'm trying to increase signal strength to a desktop with a wireless g adapter card far away from the router. It is impossible for me to reposition the modem and router. I have a WRT54G with high-gain antennas. The desktop I'm trying to connect is 150 ft. (according to my mom) or 69 ft. (according to Google Earth) away. Are wireless repeaters easy to setup for somebody with little experience? Would a wireless n router extend throughout my house? What works for you?
Can a wireless signal be too strong? I have a wireless repeater and a wireless router. The repeater is connected to the router, and then I have a couple of devices wirelessly connected to the router. I put two high gain (7db) antennas on the repeater. The signal is very high. If I connect directly in to the repeater, everything is fine. If I connect wirelessly to the repeater, it's a no-go. Is it possible to boost a signal to the point where it just causes interference? The repeater is connected wirelessly to the router, and they're a few rooms away. The place that I suspect the interference, between the repeater and the device, it's through a piece of drywall and covers about 10 feet. The signal at the device is strong; we're in the 95-100% range consistently (signal level -36dBm). I'm going to experiment with only using 1 antenna as well as lowering the output of the repeater. If none of that works, I may toy with the fragmentation threshold.....but all of that assumes that the signal can be too strong and that it can self-interfere.
Possible to have multiple wireless routers on one network? So my city has free wifi in certain areas, and I live way on the outer edge of the library's signal. The library just broadcasts with a wireless router. I've tried lots of antennas, and the only one that works is a big 3 foot long yagi antenna, and I'm able to get a real strong connection with that. Its a usb yagi antenna, with the actual dongle on the antenna itself, so its all self contained. The only problem is that while I can get a strong connection with one computer. I can't figure out any way to get all the other computers in the house connected, (I can't just put 3 foot yagis all over the house). I know there are wireless repeaters, however I don't think they will work since they don't have very big antennas, and it takes a very strong one to pick up this distant signal. So what I'm wondering is if there is any way that i can hook up my own router so that I just have the big yagi antenna on one computer, but can re-broadcast it locally from my own router to all the other computers?
Will a DSL wireless gateway purchased in US work in Cyprus? I have a friend from Cyprus who is interested in strengthening her wireless signal inside her home. The potential solutions would be to buy a repeater, buy a new wireless gateway (DSL modem & WiFi router in one), or buy a long-range USB adapter antenna. Europe has 2.4 Ghz as well as DSL through the phone company, but would a wireless gateway work alright in Cyprus? Greek portion of Cyprus. Thanks!
Will a Linksys repeater work for a Surfboard router? I have a surfboard router and it doesn't use antennas so I can't upgrade that part so I was wondering would a Linksys wireless repeater work or repeat the signal from my Surfboard router? Or will it only work with a Linksys router?
Will using a 15 foot usb repeater, rather than a 15 foot use cord, give more power to my wireless dongle? Right now I live right on the border of a wifi hotspot, I've tried many types of wireless cards and also commercial antennas, as well as home made parabolic reflectors and antennas. Out of all the things I've tried however, it seems that the very best of all by far, has been putting a USB dongle, inside of a soup can. Lately though I've rarely been able to connect even with this setup however. I have this dongle/can hooked up via a 15 foot usb chord. Well I've heard that 15 feet is the maximum you can make for a usb chord without using usb repeaters. So I'm wondering, if I replace my usb chord, with a usb repeater, will this give a little bump in voltage to my usb dongle, giving it more range and sensitivity?
How to increase wireless strength for my xbox 360 slim? I just moved my xbox 360 slim out to the shed where i stay, my router is a Thompson TG585 v7, i was hoping to get a bigger antenna for the router however the antenna itself isnt a screw off one. Is there anything for the xbox i can get to help the wireless strength or any tips on getting a repeater and how that would work with my xbox? My router is inside the house which is about 30 meters away if that helps anyone.
what is the easiest way to expand wy network? I have the Wireless Motorola Surfboard, and all I see is antennas or repeaters, but all of them require me to remove the antenna of the motorola surfboard, which is not possible, any recommendations??????
Wireless network signal is too weak? I have been asked to help a small school with their wireless network problem. In some of the buildings on the school area the network signal is too weak. I thought a simple repeater would solve the problem, but it didn't. So do I have to make a network of repeaters, or buy a sensitive USB network adapter for each laptop, or install a big antenna on the roof of the main building...?? How is this problem typically solved without costs going through the roof?
Connecting to Wireless Hotspots? I have a holiday apartment where there are lots of wifi hotspots but I can only reach them with an outdoor antenna on my balcony which I connect to the antenna point of a usb wifi adapter How and what could I connect the antenna to so that I could connect wirelessly. The whole world of routers, extenders, repeaters, wireless bridges, wireless access points etc is comletely baffling me! Reecious, thanks for your reply. My problem is not that I can not "afford" internet access in my apartment. There simply isn't any regardless of cost ! (No phone lines or cable in the complex) The whole point of an antenna is to make me not "too far away"
Extend wifi range on a Macbook? Hi, I have about a 2 year old Macbook, and there's only 1 ethernet port in my house, which is about as far away from my Macbook as possible. I have a brand new linksys wireless router, but because of the distance and the Macbook being upstairs, there's a big problem with the range. I was wondering if there is something (not another router or wireless repeater) more antenna like that would help extend my Macbook's range. I'm looking for something in the department of either an antenna or wireless adapter for my Macbook that would extend my range. Thanks!
Is there an antenna/repeater that will improve reception on both a Sprint PCS phone and a Wireless-N router? I have 2 seperate problems and I'm hoping there is one product that will solve both. First, I live in a rural area and traditional high-speed services aren't available. So my neighbor has recently signed up for Satellite internet and said if I bought a wireless router, he would allow me to use his service. So I bought a Linksys wireless-N router and he installed it. I get decent speed, but because of distance and line of sight issues ,there is room for improvement. The second problem is, I recently signed up with Sprint PCS and the reception at home is much worse than when I was with Verizon and going back to Verizon is not an option. So does anyone know of one product that could solve both problems without spending a mint? Thanks
Extending my wireless network, will this work? Will someone please explain to me how this works? I'm not computer illiterate and from my understanding, I'll plug this is to my router, it will then send the signal directly to the other plug in where ever it is plugged in as long as it's in the same power line? Am I correct? Will I then get a strong internet connection? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Netgear-XE102-Wireless-Powerline-Network-Range-Extender_W0QQitemZ310224106656QQcmdZViewItem?rvr_id=&rvr_id=&cguid=074edf6b1290a0e20213c3a3fff31e51 I live in a very big house and the router is in the other end of the house. I only get a bar in my room and sometimes I don't get any internet at all. I need something under 20 pounds that will help me get a stronger internet connection from my bedroom. Will this do the trick? Or what would? I was also looking at omni antennas, or network repeaters. I couldn't find any repeaters though just powerline extenders. If you could tell me how that works, and if that's the best choice for me or what the best choice for me would be I'd be very grateful. I have a BT Business Hub connection and modem. i have a windows vista compaq presario laptop or maybe this? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Hi-Gain%1A-USB-Wireless-G-Dish-Adapter-HWU8DD_W0QQitemZ120571674098QQcmdZViewItem?rvr_id=&rvr_id=&cguid=074edf6b1290a0e20213c3a3fff31e51
What wireless router do I need? At present I have a router given to me by TalkTalk. It is a G router but I am thinking of upgrading. I am soon going to buy a PS3, which I want wireless internet with. The problem is my router is downstairs in a corner of 2 walls. My PS3 will be upstairs in the corner of a room. I know I could move the router but that is not an option; I would prefer the minimal amount of wires. I do get a very weak signal upstairs but would not be good enough for the intensity of the PS3. I was thinking about a wireless repeater but I have heard they slow your connection down a lot. If I were to buy a new router it would have to be a modem if it helps. I've also thought about I think its called a 'Hi-Grain' antenna but my internet is used nearly everywhere in my house and I would not like to loose connection on my other Devices. Also I was looking in Argos and they sell router that they say are capable of 100M. Is this outside or would this work for me, with lots of walls and objects blocking them. I have also thought about powered antenna but would this speed my internet up? or should I go for a N/N+ for faster speeds? Thanks in advance.
Wireless Repeating Question? heres the deal: I have a netgear wgr614v9. I know that it has a wireless repeating function. Currently it is the only router i have so, of corse, its the base station. It is currently on one side of my apt. and signal is strong throughout the apt. What i want to do is set up a wireless repeater (i was thinking the same wgr614v9 model) on the far side of my apt to project a strong signal, approximately 60ft across a parking lot, into a small building. What i need to know is: Would this set up (two wgr614v9's) work? What kind of antenna would be most effective? (directional, can-tenna, etc) Any other pertinent thoughts that could help? is i stated in the second sentence: "I know that it has a wireless repeating function."
Ideas for Creating a Wireless Network for 54+ People Plus Devices? I'm currently spearheading a plan to put Wi-Fi into my community. There are 6 buildings in roughly a crescent moon formation with about a quarter of a mile from the longest ends. The buildings are made of shale, sheet rock, and some brick (mostly at the bottom floor garages), with about 9-15 apartments per building (3 apartments per floor, with 3-5 floors/building). Most of the tenants and workers are not technologically savvy, meaning any network would have to be quite reliable and long-lasting (a tech person is called in when needed, but having him reset the router(s) every 2 weeks is not an option). Assume this plan and all others will be have a dedicated cable internet connection (or multiple connections if needed) per router. I was thinking of putting in an 'extended' router in the 2nd building from the end on both sides with an attached commercial grade (still learning the differences between commercial and home use for this one) bi-directional booster/repeater antenna. Every other building will have a repeater with a unique IP to distribute the network's load, and the middle building will either need a 3rd router or repeater depending on the signal strength. Any thoughts on my current plan? Am I being too excessive? Too simple? Should I be considering other options? I'd like to think I'm pretty good with technology, but between my first time use of repeaters and having to provide for a whole literal community of users, this is definitely forcing me to think outside the box. Thanks in advance to any help you can give!!!
best way to boost wireless coverage to my bedroom? My wireless router is located in my living room. The signal doesn't reach my bedroom. What do I need to boost the signal to my nic in my laptop? I'm confused because they have so many different things: repeaters, range extenders, directional antennas, and routers with repeaters built in. Help me, Help, what do I get? I have a airlink router and 2 nic cards, a airlink and linksys.
Expanding my Wireless network on my router (help!)? I have the Cisco Lynksis E2000 router (running at 2.4Ghz) and I would like to increase the signals strength, range, or both (however range is my preference) Anything would help but I want to look for something inexpensive (less than $50) and that dosent involve much manipulation of router settings as Im not the best at these things. In other words maybe a simple hook up or attachment. Ive been looking online and Ive heard things about repeaters, antenna's, adapters and Im wondering if you have any tips on what to buy (i want it to work on my router) Oh and since I know someone might mention this I cant repostion my router :/ However my e2000 router is new, I replaced my e1000 router with it (I dont know if that can be used somehow) Hope this helps you help me ^^,
Gateway/Wireless Router Question? Ok so my boss was telling me he turned his wireless router into basically like a repeater for wireless signal. Could somebody tell me how to do this, maybe a firmware upgrade. I have a linksys 54g old style with antennas
Extend Wireless Network Range with Two Routers? I'm trying to extend the range of my wireless network so that I can access it everywhere in my house. I've tried placing the router in different parts of the house to find what offers the best coverage for the whole house, and didn't find a great location that would allow a stable connection everywhere in the house (and the backyard and patio). I've also tried boosting the antenna power to 80mW in 3rd party firmwares, and tried other antennas (but still not stable since the notebooks have limited antennas). I have two routers, both Linksys WRT54G's. One is a V2 running the latest Tomato firmware (to bypass throttling with Teksavvy MLPPP), and the other is a V5 running DD-WRT micro (only 3rd party firmware that it can run). I'm looking to see if I can use WDS or repeater mode to extend my wireless range (both in opposite corners of the house probably). I'd like a solution where the transition between AP's is seamless. The routers are connected via Ethernet already with different static IP's, with DHCP enabled for the Tomato router. I've attempted to use WDS so far (I'm guessing this solution is optimal if there is no wired link between routers, but I have one), and have followed these instructions: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php...router_network With those instructions, I'm not able to connect to the DD-WRT router when in it's coverage range. Anybody have a good solution I can try with my existing hardware? I've already tried positioning the router in different places, and I don't have any other 2.4GHz wireless devices (only on the 900MHz and 5.8GHz bands). I'm not interested in Powerline networking since I'm trying to extend my wireless range... looking for a no cable solution in which my 802.11b/g devices can connect.
Passive cell repeater antenna? I asked this in "Cell Phones" but didn't get any legit response. Hopefully you electronics folks will be more helpful. I have seen some “passive repeater” products designed for vehicles that consist of an antenna that sits on top of another smaller device located inside a vehicle that re-transmits the signal. Some of these boast of a 6db gain. I would like to be able to do the same sort of thing but using an existing “yaggi” antenna as the source with the smaller “passive repeater” unit placed such that I can get reasonable wireless reception in an immediate "base camp" area. I am not interested in spending several hundred bucks on an active repeater that requires external power. I am, however, willing to purchase one of the passive automobile repeaters and hack it such that it uses the existing “yaggi” as the source signal. Any practical advice on how to make this work? Any pointers to low cost passive repeater products that have a connection for an external antenna?
Help Me With My Wireless Internet PLEASE!!!!? Hello all. I live in a studio style apartment outside of my mother-in-law's house with my girlfriend. The apartment is in the back of a tool shop. When I am in their house my internet speed is up to 56 Mbps, however, when I am outside in our apartment, the speed drops dramatically to 2 sometimes 5 Mbps. We have wireless DSL and we do not have a wireless router hooked up, it is a wireless modem. However, I do have a brand new wireless ROUTER that I can hook up if that will somehow make the signal better. I don't really have the money to spend on any type of repeaters, signal boosters, etc. and the homemade antennas seem too complicated for me. Could someone break down how I could increase my speed up even just a little bit to be able to surf faster. Other details: Shop is apprx. 30 yards from house, tin roof. Here is a link to the "floorplan" of how the house and shop is layed out and where I am / the modem is ... etc. http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m86/WCHudgins06/Sketch.jpg
Networking advice. This one's a bit tricky...? I'm trying to get my wifi signal out to a trailer I'm using as a workshop. I'm using a trendnet TEW-691GR wireless N router, which broadcasts in both 450 Mbs and 300 Mbs, and I'm using a Linksys WMP300n wireless antenna on the server in my trailer. I'm trying to use that internet connection on other devices in the trailer, either by Ethernet switch or wireless repeater/bridge/access point. using dhcp, i can get my other devices to recognize the network, but not any of the other computers on that network. the server using the router is only reading it as a wireless G connection, even though the router is only broadcasting in wireless N, not b/g/n. my goal is to have internet to every device in the trailer. I have an ethernet switch, a router programmed to act like a bridge/repeater, 2 cat 5e Ethernet cables and 1 cat 6 crossover cable. I need to connect an xbox 360, a desktop, and a laptop to my custom built server with a 100Mb/s onboard network card. i need to get the internet connection from my pci wifi antenna to that onboard network card. anybody know how to route this properly? the intention is I have internet on one device in the trailer. I'm trying to distribute it to the rest of my devices. the router is in the house, a second router, programmed to act as a wireless repeater/bridge, is in the trailer, along with a 5-port Ethernet switch.

Passive cell repeaters? My family has a very rural hunting/getaway place with a “base camp” that is located in a low spot on the property. Even in the higher spots cell phone coverage is spotty at best. We have a “yaggi” style antenna that will give us strong signal if it is plugged directly into an external antenna connection on a phone. This is workable, but somewhat inconvenient. I have seen some “passive repeater” products designed for vehicles that consist of an antenna that sits on top of another smaller device located inside the vehicle that re-transmits the signal. Some of these boast of a 6db gain. I would like to be able to do the same sort of thing but using the existing “yaggi” antenna as the source with the smaller “passive repeater” unit placed such that we can get reasonable wireless reception in the immediate base camp area. I am, however, willing to purchase one of the passive automobile repeaters and hack it such that it uses the existing “yaggi” as the source signal. Any practical advice on how to make this work will be greatly appreciated. Any pointers to low cost passive repeater products that have an external antenna connection will be a big plus.
Boosting my school's wireless internet? The college that I'm currently going to has a web of routers all scattered around the school. Each separate building (for the most part) has their own router for wireless access. Unfortunately the school cheaped out when it came to repeaters and so beyond the first and second floors the internet pretty much dies off completely. Most of my classes are on the third+ floors so this is becoming a problem. I have a new Asus EEE PC 1201pn that I picked up for school. Is their anything I can do from my side to boost the signal. I've heard of suggestions regarding DIY directional antennas but I'd really like to avoid having to carry around some pringle can duct taped Macgyver type device just to connect to the internet. Is their anything that can be done? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
how to boost wireless , wifi signal? i have a laptop with built in wireless and can pick up signals nearby my apartment that come in very week. does anyone know how to increase the signal strength? i know some people will just tell me to pay for my own internet, but lets be realistic.. if there are unsecured signals out there to use, why not use them? i saw repeaters online, but im not sure if those would work for me, also larger antennas would not work, since i dont have access to the router.. thanks in advance
Can you use a wireless router as a range bridge/extender/repeater? Ok, so we have a wireless network in my house that works perfectly fine except for one thing, our ps3 isnt close enough to pick up a signal. We can't move the existing router and modem so that is out of the picture. We tried upgrading to a new Netgear N router with 8 antennas (yes 8) and that was faster but did not have enough range. We have a belkin G+ mimo router (2 antennas) and an extra comcst surfboard modem (yes we do have comcast). Is there a way to use the old router as a bridge/range extender/repeater or to plug the modem and router in and make a second network?
Suggestins for a low cost extreamly rural wireless communications solution? So... I have some family land that is in the absolute middle of the boonies. It's got your basic travel trailer living quarters that sports a 12V car battery that is kept charged by a small solar panel. It provides enough juice for a weekend camping trip. It is possible to get a cell signal at the campsite if you place a yagi style antenna on a large pole and have a phone that will except a direct external antenna connection. This, however, is quite inconvenient as one must be tethered to the antenna. A repeater would be ideal, but those things run well over $500. A satellite internet connection with wireless router and a VIOP phone would work but we are talking a couple of hundred for installation plus a minimum of $30 per month. This is way to much for a place that only gets used a couple of times a year. Any creative suggestions for a low cost wireless communications solution for this very rural low use location?
Why can't I connect to my wireless repeater by ethernet? I have a wireless repeater that has a high gain antenna fitted to it to pick up my neighbour's network, which we use to share broadband. When I use my PC's wireless card it works fine, but the speed is greatly reduced (as you'd expect with wireless) so I'd rather connect to the repeater by ethernet. I have done this successfully and got a full speed connection, but only when I set it as a bridge that makes a non-wireless device (such as an xbox) wireless. As soon as I set it up as a wifi repeater the ethernet won't work at all. Any ideas??
I'm trying to extend my internet up to 500 ft, what do I need? I'm looking at two items: http://www.amazon.com/Hawking-Directional-Antenna-outdoor-HAO14SDP/dp/B000B59J8I/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top http://www.amazon.com/Hawking-Hi-Gain-Outdoor-Wireless-300N-Repeater/dp/B003O7MY1E/ref=pd_sim_sbs_e_4 Do I need two antennas, one antenna, or should I pair a repeater and antenna? I'm not very techy, so any advice would be helpful. Also, I need the signal to reach into a building outside of the home that is probably about 300 feet away. What do I need and what would be the best cost effective way to achieve this? Thank you.
What do I need to broadcast an outdoor WiFi network? House 1 (H1) has ADSL. Would like to broadcast a wireless signal over about 500-800 feet to reach another house (H2). Do I need one wireless router at H1 with a range extender antenna, and a repeater (router setup as repeater)in H2 with another range extender antenna? There are no obstacles between both houses, flat land. Would this setup work?
How do I wirelessly network two buildings? I want to set up a wireless network in a second building at work by connecting to a wireless network in the office building. The two buildings have trees/brush between them and are about 400 ft apart. Do I need an antenna with a repeater? If so how do I connect the two? Thanks for your help! There will only be about 4 people total on the network. Can you run a cat5 cable that far? Or would it have to be fiber?
How do I strengthen my wireless internet signal? I have Comcast Internet and in order to network my house we bought a Netgear Wireless N router, one of the best on the market according to many professionals and computer magazines. We figured this would provide us with the strength needed to network our house but it didn't So we got a second one of these Netgear Wireless N routers to act as a repeater. Unfortunately, between the main router and my room (about 65 -70 feet away), the internet signal seems to get lost. I still have my local signal at full or almost full strength but no internet signal and when I do I only have tops 2 mbps when my wired connection tops out at 20 mbps. My friend whose tech savvy said that's no where near Wireless N speeds or even Wireless G speeds (my computer only picks up on the G signal). So I want to know if there's anyway to prevent the internet signal from getting lost in translation here. The routers have internal antennas, which point in all directions and like I said, I have a problem with the internet signal, my local signal is fine. There's no way to attach an antenna, the antenna are internal and point in every direction. And getting a new router isn't an option, these cost a lot of money and are new.
Creating an External Wireless Network from your home based Internet Connection? I have a 20mbps/1mbps connection at home and I have a dlink gaming router to provide wirelss around my house. I want to be able to extend that wireless outside. I have found many high gain antennas but I am not sure how to do this. I understand setting up one high gain antenna.. I can do that right outside my balcony (I live in an apartment building). The baclony has a clear line of site for hundreds of feet (there are many tall buildings nearby). Is it possible to make one antenna connected to my network here, then lets say 400 feet away, another antenna which is powered at another location, and it can act as a repeater or range extender? In that fashion, strategically place 3-10 of similar powered antennas in the area to bounce the signal or to blanket and area. Almost like cell towers? My goal is to be able to get wireless internet/connect to my network @ home within a large area while not being home. Thanks
What's better to use... a Wireless Access Point or a Wireless Range Expander (Repeater).? Hi Everyone, I want to extend the wireless signal in our small office and need help on which would work better for the job, a wireless access point, or a wireless extender? Currently, here is the setup... We have a T1 line that is connected to an older Linksys WRT54GS that has two 7db antennae's. However, two of our small office rooms in the back (about 70 feet away and 6 - 8 walls in between) have a very very low signal and it often drops off. We have no servers, so the Linksys WRT54GS is used as our DHCP and assigns the IP addresses. Also, all the computers in our office are wireless, because there are no LAN ports available on the walls (i.e. building is not wired for internet). FInally, moving the Wireless Router closer to the back office rooms is not an option either, because then the front side of the office would experience the same faint signal as the back rooms do. Any ideas which is better to use? Thanks!
Which is the best G wireless router for a big Concrete house? hi i live in a 1 floor house. Its shaped more or less like a letter l. and it is constructed with a lot of concrete. i first bought a Linksys WRT54G... worked perfectly...sadly it fell really hard and died. wanted to buy the same but couldn't find it. So i had to try some new ones. I had bought: Belkin Wireless G Plus MIMO Router ( i would lost connection every 10 mnts) , Linksys N Ultra ( thinking it would have a better G or B perfomance......sucks)... I dnt care the cost... I just want a wireless router that can let me get a very good signal strength while crossing at least 1 wall. I dont prefer the ones with integrated antennas... I dont know if i have to buy another access point or a repeater ...... I wouldn;t mind combing Wired stuff with wireless.... the goal is a "very Good" and able to play PS3 and Xbox 360 online at the same time.... there are 5 laptops and a dekstop.. Rember is a heavy concrete/ brick house so it as to be powerful
wireless connection questions? right now i use a zyxel wireless pci card AND a Linksys on another PC (in a diff. room) to get signal from someone in the building, BUT i get 2 open signals the farthest one i can connect to with the zyxel (in my room) sometimes cuts of but reconnects in a short time( it gets annoying) and the other closest signal i cant connect with the zyxel why cant i, and for the linksys i can connect to the one the zyxel cant connect to, why is that soo what can i use to get to get a stronger signal on the zyxel card i moved it around the signal is the same all over the place for it, would a repeater work for both even though im piggybacking since you would have to install the program on the PC that the signal is coming from or what can it do i looked up those homemade antennas since supposebly they work and no didnt work, and how would i fix the problem i have in not being able to connect to the other signal , i reinstalled it and still can't connect to the other one i also have a linksys router idk why i have one since i dont have internet, can i be able to use that to make the connection better or it wont since im getting connection
Should I get a WRT54GL? I own a WRT54G v6 with two high-gain antennas. I use a desktop across the house with a wireless card to connect to the internet. Most of the time I get around 11mbps, and usually it reconnects quickly after dropping out. Less often however, it does not reconnect until about half an hour. Are the dropouts my router's fault? Should I get a WRT54GL to put DD-WRT on it? Will it really make a difference, or should I just buy a wireless repeater?
New router worse than old one? I just bought this $100 Linksys Wireless-N Router to replace my cheap Netgear-G router. I have been using my Desktop computer with a Linksys Wireless-G PCI card with the wireless router. I set up the new router, but now the connection with my PCI card is worse off than it was before (I got 3-4 bars before, but now I get 1-2). I even moved the router across the room but to no avail. The router is in the same place as it was before. It has NO EXTERNAL ANTENNAS. I am considering buying a different router, a wireless repeater, or finding help here. And if this doesn't belong in this section. PLEASE DON'T LOCK. Move it instead.
Any fixes for a loosing wireless connectivity and weak signal strength all of a sudden? Had great conn be4? I've got fios, been ok for years then all of a sudden, constantly loosing connection and week signal. Modem uptairs , laptop downstairs, I did not change anything. I have recycled, refreshed Actiontec FIOS router. I checked my plugs.I did IPconfig /flush /renew /refresh...all that, nothing changes really. The signal just keeps going on and off. Would a repeater, or a stronger antenna, or a better router do? It's the newest free router verizon gives you, 2 yrs old. It is wireless G actiontec ver. C . I have WPA2. Only other media online is the fios cable box.
Choosing wireless LAN adapter for pc? Hi, I need some advice for choosing a wireless adapter. Currently, there is a Linksys WRT300N router at my home. The problem is that the router is on the 1st floor and I use my computer in the basement (also farthest distance possible from corner to corner). I have PCI LAN adapter (with a decent antenna) on my pc which receives 802.11g signals and currently I get about 30% strength of the signal. This is too weak and the connection sometimes just turns off because of the weak signal. Would changing the adapter to 802.11n supported one improve the signal strength a lot? or would it be the best to get a signal repeater?
Which long-range wireless router do you recommend? Hi, I am looking for a high range wireless router, does not matter if it's G or N, what's I'm looking for is wireless coverage. I have no N devices, I have 2 computers, one netbook and an iPod Touch, all of them use the G protocol. Right now I have a belkin F5D7230-4, which provides basic coverage with only one antenna, about 30 feet with walls and obstacles until the connection quality reaches "low", maybe I will use this one as a repeater/access point. So I need brand and router model, I think Linksys is a very good option buy I've heard D-Link newest routers have greater range so I am pretty undecided, next week I'll be buying it. Thanks
How can I extend the range of a wireless usb mouse? I have a wireless usb mouse that works about 5-10 feet away from the usb reciever. I would like to extend its range. I think its bluetooth, but im not sure. I do not want to get a repeater or something or use an extention chord for the usb reciever, I want to open it up (which I already have) and increase the antenna length, but I dont know if it will work. I saw someone do this to their car remote thingy, but im not sure with a mouse. Please only serious answers, Thanks.
How to make a parabolic dish reflector? Hey everybody. I'Ve got this problem in making a D-I-Y parabolic reflector. Most videos on the web shows how to make one but the router they use has an external antenna but mine has only an internal antenna and I don't want to open my router as it will void the warranty. My plan is to make a parabolic dish reflector like the ones used with sat tv's but a smaller one and using Aluminum foil. Please give me a step by step procedeur on how to make one.any help will be appreciated. Thanks! :D P.S. Pleas don't give answers like I should reposition my router because I don't have somewhere else to place my router or that I should buy stuff like a wireless repeater because I don't have the cash
Wireless Routers, Access Points, Repeaters? They are essentially the same hardware, are they not? Can you mod/hack just about any router to repeat the signal or must you buy so-called repeaters to do that? I have a Linksys WRT54GX2 MIMO router with fixed antennas. I need to direct the signal to a structure several hundreds of feet away. Will modding the antennas with DIY parabolic reflector work or just screw up the echo tech of this device? Is there a better way to modify/replace the antennas that are said to be non-replaceable? Should I ditch this router altogether for something like the WRT54G V.4 or below to take advantage of Linux hacks and replaceable antennas? I'm looking at repeaters but they are generally pricey. Access Points and Routers abound for much less and I cannot understand why that is since they appear on the surface to be the same type of hardware.
once again, a way to improve wireless signal? i asked once before but got no useful answers. i'm upstairs with ps3, dsl is downstairs, i normally have about an 80% signal strength, BUT normally that's ok, it keeps going from that down to 70 or 60 or sometimes even 50, i have a high gain antenna that brought it up to 80, but it keeps doing this and causing me a lot of lag, i'll be playing and it takes a few seconds for anything to happen. i see a guy, shoot, 3 seconds later i'm dead wondering wtf. anyone know a way to keep it at a high signal rather than high then sometimes going really low and unbearably laggy? things NOT to suggest: high gain antenna, already got one wired connection: if i could, i would have gotten a wired connection LONG ago, but my dad says "it'll look bad" if i have a wire going up the wall and ceiling. hello, this is the freaking 21st century no one has a home that has no wire visible, stop living in the stone age. signal repeater, i have heard of it but i have no idea what it is, where to get it, or how much it costs. also, odn't say "your signal is fine" because if you've ever played online on a ps3 on cod4 or cod5, and you've ever gotten lag, imagine constant lag many times and normally getting a 2:1 k/d ratio AT THE LEAST when instead you get a 1:10 k/d ratio. point being, no my signal is not ok. what do you mean by i probably have it set to normal? 2nd guy, you clearly didn't understand the "don't suggested getting wireless connection" part did you? i can't get a wire and take it up to my room, nor can i pay to have one professionally installed, 1. it's too expensive for a 15 year old boy to afford considering he's not old enough to have a job where he lives yet and 2. he won't have that either, he's just plain against anything being good or conveniant, if it'll help me out, he won't have it interference, i have a cell phone but it's not using the signal nor is it very large, there's a microwave downstairs but it's not always on, a fridge, but who doesn't have one, and another tv but it isn't using the signal, and yes i'm being ripped off. you have to work at highland to get good speed, even my computer speed sucks cock, and my dad says to increase it i have to get a new deal from highland that increases speed but that would cost 40 bucks more, (bull) but my friend and cousin both have a parent that works at highland and their speed is so fast that it makes me look like i'm walking compared to them driving a freaking drag racer. networking companies like highland are so freaking cheap, to get a good speed you either work for them or pay more than it's worth
internet works every time i change the IP for seconds then it disconnect again. HELP? its not not workin at all when the antenna set to wireless client but it works for few seconds when i set it to repeater(after that few seconds it disconnect, and connect again when i change the IP of my PC . , and when i connect with the antenna with another device (wifi) it connect and works fine,, but still doesnt work on ma PC. HELPP and this few secounds , the intenet is too fast, Windows firewall is OFF
How do I extend the range of my router? I want the PS3 in the lounge by the TV to connect. My family uses two laptops which both use wireless internet and they are about 15m closer to the router than the PS3, and they connect fine. The reason I don't want to buy a new router is that I heard you need to set everything up all again. Can I buy a repeater or something and put it halfway? are they easy to setup? what do they look like? Or should I buy a better antenna? can most antennas go into most routers? Please try keep it simple
I have the following wireless equipment- 1 unit Dlink N series Access point AND 2 units of Dlink G Series Acce? I have the following access points and supporting equipment. 1 unit Dlink N series access point 2 units Dlink G series access points 1 unit 10 dbi DIRECTIONAL antenna with a 10 meter antenna cable and a couple of 7 dbi OMNI directional antennas The only option I have to to start is from the corner of the house. Should i use the N series as a repeater with 1 unit G series as the primary AP My question is this: In your opinion what how would you setup this equipment if you had it with you?
What do i need to set up a long range wifi repeater? basically looking for a router or repeater to pick up a wireless signal at distance, and create its own local hotspot Was looking for external antennas with this set up in mind.. one directional to pick up and broadcast the signal to from the hot spot, and another omni directional antenna to create my own hot spot. Whats the best way to do this?
